Nunc Coepi
Last night during halftime of the Monday Night Football game Phillip Rivers, the QB for the Chargers, was being interviewed. Now admittedly I have never been a Phillip Rivers fan. I’m a Denver Bronco fan and no self-respecting Bronco fan would ever like the very competent QB of a division rival. But. After his interview I became a fan. Rivers was wearing a Nike shirt that read “Nunc Coepi.” My linguistic studies tell me that’s a Latin phrase but what does it mean?
And just like that I fell into a Latin/Catholic/Phillip Rivers worm hole.
Nunc Coepi is a phrase that Rivers, a devout Catholic and father of seven, used during his delivery of a commencement address at the Catholic University of America in D.C. The Chargers have adopted it as a team phrase.
Nunc Coepi. Now I begin. In the commencement address Rivers told the class in our prayer, in our habits, in our relationships, in our profession. Whether you made a bad grade or didn’t so well on a project. You must begin again.
To read his speech in its entirety, check it out here. It’s absolutely worth the read.
So I leave you with Nunc Coepi.
