Why You Should Walk

Idaho is among the lowest in the country for women over 40 getting their mammograms and it needs to stop. 

May 7, 2016 is going to be an incredible day. We want to join together not only as a station, but as a radio family. We want to rally together and Race for the Cure against breast cancer. We want this to be the biggest, baddest team on the streets of Boise and this is why YOU should join us.

First off, chances are you have been affected by breast cancer in one way or another. You've heard the statistics, 1 in every 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Those numbers are overwhelming.

For me, my connection with breast cancer came through one of my dearest friends in the world, Whitney Peterson. We've known each other since we were young teenagers, she was my neighbor for 8 years before I moved to the Treasure Valley, and we have shared everything together. Babies, marriage troubles, sickness, health, everything.

I will never ever forget her coming up to me in High School and telling me that her Mom had breast cancer. I was really close to her Mom, Debra. We share the same birthday, April 19th, and she had become like a second Mother to me. At first I thought, she's going to be fine. She'll receive some chemo, radiation, and she will be fine.

She wasn't. About a year and a half after endless treatments and painful sickness, she lost her battle with breast cancer on May 25, 2000. I was on a trip to New York City at the time. I'll never forget the note on my bed telling me to call home and receiving the news. I walked away from my vacation and immediately flew home. Their family has never quite been the same. Someone is missing. Someone that was one of the brightest lights I've ever seen. Everyone loved Debra. She made everyone feel so welcome in her home. Now she's been gone for nearly 16 years. She has missed grandbabies being born, her children growing up, and so many milestones along the way. I miss her. I can't even comprehend how much they miss her. I'll be walking for Debbie on May 7th.

Here's some reasons we should all walk.

• when detected early, 98% of of breast cancer survivors will be cancer free 5 years later.
• about 87% of women who get breast cancer do not have a family history. Breast cancer can happen to anyone.
• the greatest risks for breast cancer is being female and growing older. Ladies, that's every one of us.
