I hate raking leaves; in fact I don't think I even own a rake! So I was happy to discover these reasons why we shouldn't be raking here in the "City of Trees!"

This is legit. A USA Today article featured on KTVB.com gives us some real reasons why we shouldn't be raking at all and it makes me feel a whole lot less guilty about letting those leaves pile up.

  1. It Saves You Money! I'm all about saving some cash! They say you can use the leaves as mulch so you don't have to buy it later. You can move them to your garden, but don't just toss them.
  2. Wildlife Needs Your Leaves! Caterpillars, larva, and insects are in your leaves whether you recognize it or not. If you rake up the leaves you affect the butterfly population and birds that will come looking for food for their babies. They count on the leaf litter you are raking away.
  3. It saves you time and the environment! The leaves make up 20%-30% of what we throw away, so we're all better off by you letting your leaves decompose naturally.

Residents on the Boise Bench Dwellers Facebook page were weighing in on this matter and they argue that the leaves will kill your grass and cause fungus. Others agree that they can be mulched up into your grass to actually benefit your lawn. They also mention the new Boise City Compost Program where you can apparently put out unlimited bags of leaves with your compost bin which is a win win!

Luckily for me I have only two trees and they haven't made too much of a mess so far!
