Here's some great tips to spending a little less this holiday season.

I swear my Christmas budget gets bigger and bigger every year. Sometimes I think I might as well not set a budget at all, but Venture Capital Post disagrees. They say you should follow these tips to avoid over spending around the holidays.

1. Talk to your kids about how and why you're buying presents on a budget. Explain that how much you spend on the holidays influences how much you'll have for summer vacation etc. (I think this works better with older kids, because my kids are 7 & 9 and they just wouldn't get this, but teenagers might.)

2. Throughout the year put money aside in a separate account that is dedicated solely to holiday spending.

3. Commit to start planning a couple of months before the holidays. Make a list and assign a budget to each gift.

4. Avoid being lured by attractive ads and catalogs. Stick with your list and don't vary from it just because you see something on sale.

5. Have 2-3 options for each person within your price range and stick with those items.
