Firefighters are now fighting mud and falling rocks in their attempts to contain the largest fire in the United States.

The Pioneer Fire is now at 62% containment.  Most roads have been opened back up and most towns are no longer going through evacuations but our firefighters have a new problem with this beast.

The cooler temperatures and some rain in the mountains has slowed the progress of the fire but it's also slowed the progress of our firefighters.  Heavy mud and falling rocks and debris have made it difficult to move forward as quickly as we'd like.  Crews have had to spend extra time removing these obstacles so they can get to the fire lines.

There are still hot pockets being found above the Long Creek Summer Homes and that area is still under a Level 2 Evacuation order.

The Pioneer Fire is not expected to be fully contained until mid-October.
