I'm sure you have seen the memes! But here's the explanation.

Michael Phelps has spoken and says his "glare" wasn't directed at rival Chad le Clos. You may remember during the London Olympics in 2012, Chad le Clos of South Africa took Gold in the men's 200m butterfly beating Michael Phelps the most decorated Olympian of all time.

According to msn.com, "Michael Phelps put on a terrifying game face that turned into  the best meme of the Rio Olympics before his 200m butterfly semi-finals race.  When the moment aired, it looked like the glare was directed at le Clos".

Phelps has "cleared the air" and told TODAY, "I just had music going on in my head. I had thoughts going on in my head, spitting water a little bit all over the place, so I was in my own zone," he said. "I was not intentionally mean mugging him or giving him a dirty look."

Either way, Phelps took Gold and though great memes came from his "death glare". This is my favorite meme:
