My oldest daughter, Tessie, was invited to a Disney-themed party over the weekend. You were supposed to come in costume. The one she picked might surprise you.

At a Disney party attended by a bunch of little girls, you can expect the usual suspects... Elsa, Cinderella, even the occasional little mermaid.  But my oldest daughter isn't really the princess type.  She told me once that one of the problems with princesses is that "they always need to be rescued."  (That's my girl!  Sisters doing it for themselves!  Smash the patriarchy!)

We talked a lot about costume options when I discovered that Disney now owns Marvel, the home of the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, and many others.  That's when we had our "ah-ha" moment!  She could go as a super hero to the Disney party, play within the parameters, yet still be true to herself.

She chose the X-Men character Rogue.

What was really cool was the reaction from the other little girls.  Everybody thought her costume was awesome! I was so proud of her.  I want her to grow up knowing she really can be whatever she wants to be.  If that means being Rogue in a sea of Sleeping Beauties, I support her 100 percent!
