A man is dead this morning after a high-speed chase led to an officer-involved shootout in Ontario.

The trouble started in Caldwell, Idaho last night after the man was reported as "driving erratically at high speeds" along I-84.

When Idaho State Police troopers tried to pull the man over he refused and crashed into several vehicles instead.

The chase was suspended for a while but resumed when a Canyon County Sheriffs Deputy spotted him driving westbound on I-84.

They used spike strips on the man's pickup truck to try and stop him at the Idaho/Oregon border but even that didn't bring him to a stop for about 6 more blocks.

According to KTVB, when the man got out of his truck he engaged with officers, shots were fired, and he was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Ontario where he later passed away.

Investigators and law enforcement say a handgun was found by the suspect and that the truck he was driving was stolen.

The man has now been identified as 25-year-old Victor J. Morales Zavala of Ontario. I wish these kinds of situations never had to end like this. I trust that our officers did everything they've been taught to do and it's just a very unfortunate ending. Luckily, no officers were hurt during the situation.
