A 6.6 earthquake struck Italy this morning. How at risk are we for a big quake?

It's the second large earthquake to strike Italy this year. Back in August, a quake killed almost 300 people in this same region.

According to msn.com it happened at 7:40 in the morning. Nuns and Munks fell to their knees as they watched the historical Basilica of St. Benedict collapse.

So far their are no reports of deaths, but several people have been injured. Many residents had not returned to the area since the quake in August, which is why there is no death toll as of yet.

The quake was felt in Rome and as far as the border of Austria and down to the Southern tip of Italy.

Quakes have become a reoccurring problem in Italy because they sit on two geographical fault lines.

This made me wonder, how at risk are we in Idaho to have a big earthquake.

I discovered, the city of Rexburg, Idaho actually sits on a fault line and Eastern Idaho is much more likely to have a big quake than we are here in the Western part of Idaho.

The largest quake ever recorded here in Idaho was a 6.9 and happened in 1983. It was dubbed the Borah Peak Earthquake and shook the central part of the state.

The Borah Peak Earthquake killed two children and several business buildings and houses were destroyed.

Bottom line, you never know when disaster could strike, so we need to be as prepared as possible. In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers go out to Italy this morning as they try to recover.
