Good News, Idaho: You Can Legally Marry Your Cousin… Here’s How

For some people, the best options for love are right under your nose – maybe it’s a coworker, a longtime close friend… or your cousin.

Again, we’re not here to judge but some people just can’t ignore that unique connection with that special someone at the family reunion. But, don’t get too excited – you can’t get hitched with just any cousin.

Idaho legislature says:

All marriages between first cousins are prohibited.

Sorry, we don’t mean to be the bearer of bad news but at least you can still marry your second cousin, right? But, if you’re still trying to find a way to marry that special cousin, you’re in luck.

You’ll just have to make a little drive down to Utah. According to Utah Legislation:

First cousins may marry under the following circumstances: if both parties are 65 years of age or older; or if both parties are 55 years of age or older, upon a finding by the district court, located in the district in which either party resides, that either party is unable to reproduce.

If that’s too many restrictions, don’t worry – there’s a way you can pull this off in Wisconsin with fewer restrictions. According to Wisconsin Legislation:

...Marriage may be contracted between first cousins where the female has attained the age of 55 years or where either party, at the time of application for a marriage license, submits an affidavit signed by a physician stating that either party is permanently sterile.

Hey, at least you have options, right?
