In some places in the country naming a cockroach after your ex is a sign of malice and revenge but Zoo Boise has a more unique way of looking at it!

The Hemsley Conservation Centre in London went viral last week by launching it's "Name a cockroach after your Ex" program for 2019. For the $2 you get to name a cockroach after someone who wronged you and receive a certificate to commemorate the occasion that reads: "I’ve named a cockroach at the Hemsley Conservation Centre in the not so loving memory of my worthless ex!" Posts about the program spread like a wildfire across social media.

What you might not realize is that Zoo Boise's had a similar program for several years, but they put a much more positive spin on the tradition. They encourage you to name a cockroach after someone that will always have your heart: your spouse, a best friend or family member.  Why? Because like the seemingly indestructible cockroach, your love can survive anything!

For $10, you can name a cockroach through Zoo Boise's website and get you a commemorative certificate to present to your special valentine! If you'd like to take it a step further you can upgrade your package to spend some one on one time with your Valentine and one of your favorite zoo animals. The private tours packages include:

  • Penguin Tour: 30 minutes behind the scenes of the penguin enclosure and feeding your favorite cold weather birds. $45
  • Giraffe Tour: 30 minutes behind the scenes with Jabari and Tafari and feed them a snack. $45.
  • Aldabra Tortoise Tour: 30 minutes with the Albdara tortoise where you'll get to go behind the scenes and touch the Aldabra tortoise.
