Yesterday I announced that I was shutting down my facebook page. This is why.

First of all, it had nothing to do with my employer as some have suggested.  In fact, my employer is kind of freaking out.  So, to keep everybody happy, I’ll still be posting at the Randy & Alana and the WOW 104.3 facebook pages.  But posting to the work-related pages should help me regulate my usage better, especially since I deleted the app from my phone.

No more mindlessly scrolling through the facebook timeline and suddenly wondering where two hours went.  No more feeling like crap at the end of the day because of all of the negativity we’re exposed to on facebook.  No more feeling bad about myself when I see how happy and successful people I haven’t talked to in 15 years seem to be.  I’m detoxing.

And I have my 8 year old daughter, Tessie, to thank.

At lunch yesterday she asked me what I was doing.  I told her I was just checking something on my phone.  She said, “Wow Dad.  You and Mom sure spend a lot of time on facebook.  You know, you would be mad if I brought my toys or a book to the dinner table.”

Out of the mouths of babes.

At that point I realized that I was chasing relationships on facebook, when in reality, I was ignoring my most important relationships.  I want to take time to spend with people face to face, or heck, even communicate through texting or email – all still more personal than “liking” a post a person puts up.

I don’t know how long this will last, but I’m going to give it a shot.  In fact, it seems like I’m not alone.  A friend of the show, Christine Race, sent me this link to a movement called “99 Days of Freedom.”  Check it out.  And maybe join me.

Don’t post about it though, because I won’t see it.  Instead, shoot me an email and let me know your thoughts: randy@wow1043.com.
