What It Feels Like To Be Hit In The Face With A Shovel [Part 4]
This is PART 4 of my reflections about when my daughter who has Down syndrome was born.
It started with my oldest daughter, Tess. How was I going to tell her that her new sister, who was still in the hospital, was different? On the way home I stopped at a grocery store and bought a birthday cake.
I took it home and we sang happy birthday to her sister who was still in the hospital with mom, and Tess and I ate that whole dang cake. We celebrated because we added a new member to our family – not a medical diagnosis, a beautiful little girl named Isabelle Lucille.
Here’s the deal. You will take shovel to the face. It’s not if, it’s when. A relationship goes bad, you get sick, you lose your job, you have a child with a disability. Whatever it is, you can’t control what happens to you. But you can control your story.
