Toxic algae has been found in Lake Lowell. Here's what you need to know to keep you and your family safe!

Southwest District Health has found toxic algae in one area of Lake Lowell. They are urging the public to exercise caution on the lake.

Blue-green algae occurs naturally in bodies of water but it blooms under the right conditions which include stagnant water and temperature shifts.

According to KTVB, Blue-green algae is actually a bacteria and when it blooms it released toxins into the water. Blue-gree algae can appear as a mat, foam, or surface scum.

If you get it on your skin you should wash your skin off immediately with clean water.

The symptoms of exposure to blue-green algae include

  • skin rash
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • damage to internal organs if severe enough

Be aware that pets and livestock can be affected by the toxins as well, so keep them away from the water.

Officials are conducting tests and hopefully the toxic algae will be gone in a couple of weeks.
