With the Pioneer Fire still less than 50% contained and The Cherry Road Fire exploding to over 30,000 acres overnight, we're reminded of the Idaho fire that scorched 3 Million acres back in 1910.

It was an especially dry summer and a deadly combination of lightening storms, and hurricane like winds turned thousands of small fires into the deadliest and most destructive fire in Idaho's history. "The Big Burn" of 1910 killed 86 people, most of them firefighters on the front line.

It's estimated that the raging fire caused about $10 million dollars in damages (an astronomical amount especially in 1910.) in over just two days!

Luckily a summer rain, 2,400 men battling the blaze, and a much needed cold front eventually helped put out the flames.

The damage from "The Big Burn" can still be seen today. Burnt trees can be spotted  over 100 years later in Northern Idaho.
