With only a population of 25, there is a reason this town has been almost completely abandoned.

Atomic City, Idaho has a pretty scary nuclear past. In 1961 a nuclear explosion rocked the city and it has never been the same.

The city, located in South Eastern Idaho, was originally called Midway, Idaho but being located just a few miles away from the Idaho National Laboratory nuclear waste treatment and storage complex, the name changed to Atomic City.

People took off in droves because of the nuclear disaster. Today most people won't even visit Atomic Idaho.

All that exists is a solitary store, the Atomic City Raceway, and a few run down houses. The city also no longer sells gasoline due to the underground gas tanks.

After the nuclear explosion of 1961, most people got out and the highway was even redirected around the city.

The explosion was so devastating that the 3 victims had to buried in lead coffins encased with concrete! Several radio active accidents have happened in the area since then, but none have been deadly.
