In the film, the mad titan Thanos is deadset on eradicating half of all lifeforms in the galaxy. Why? Simply, to bring balance. To do so, he has to collect all six Infinity Stones, hence the name of the film. At which point, he can do his bidding with a simple snap of his fingers.
