Regardless of which side you're on with the ongoing gun debate, this law seems to be common sense.

In the aftermath of the Florida high school shooting, citizens and lawmakers alike are calling for action to be taken to prevent another such tragedy. In Oregon, it didn't take them long to restrict certain individuals from obtaining a firearm.

Oregon's legislature banned anyone convicted of stalking or domestic violence from purchasing a gun. Same goes for anyone under a restraining order. Republican gubernatorial candidate Knute Buehler voted alongside democrats to pass the new legislation:

I think survivors of domestic violence shouldn't have to live in fear that their abusers can obtain a firearm.

Opponents of the legislation says it violates the second amendment by not allowing citizens to protect themselves with a firearm. If, by law, you're not legally allowed to possess a firearm or ammunition and get caught doing so, you could face up to a year in prison.
