Hurricane Mathew has hit Haiti hard.  More than 350,000 people have been affected and the death toll is around 800.

 

Janis Walton is a woman from Wood River Valley, Idaho and is now currently living in Gonaives, which is on the east coast of Haiti has teamed up with Eben-Ezer, a nonprofit group fighting poverty in the country.

 

She says the rain is non-stop and all the water flushes down the mountains and brings in bacteria which runs right into the streams and wells people use to drink, bathe, and for laundry.

 

The country's already lost 800 people and the aftermath of Hurricane Mathew is expected to take more lives.  Within a couple of months, some of the residents will most likely start suffering from Cholera, a potentially deadly intestinal infection.  It may be bad enough to where it's actually an epidemic.

 

Walton is advising those that want to help, to please not donate food.  That puts the local businesses out of business which hurts their already struggling economy.  If you'd like to help, please look into non-profits that are there on the island because they know exactly what their people need.  Here are some of those organizations...
