The debate about guns on school campuses is a heated one. Some oppose the idea to arm teachers, while others support the decision to have an armed school official on duty. While we may never reach a full agreement as a state, one Idaho school district has taken a proactive approach by hiring their first armed guard this summer in an effort to improve school safety.

Lakeland Joint School District has decided to hire its first armed guard this summer "in an effort to improve school safety." The ultimate goal, according to KTVB, is to have an armed guard at each of their 11 schools in the district, in addition to the two resource officers already employed. Long response times could be one of the reasons why the district made their choice. Assistant Superintendent with the superintendent, Lisa Sexton, says it took authorities 22 minutes to respond to a recent call to Athol Elementary -the school where the new guard will assist.
