Idaho Gets New Area Code

In the beginning Idaho didn't even have an area code and for decades we've only had "208" but like it or not a second Idaho area code is about to take affect. 

Starting Saturday we will need to start dialing 1-208- in order to prepare for the new area code "986" that will be implemented in August.

The first Idaho area code "208" was implemented back in 1947.

An additional area code is now necessary because of the high number of cell phones, plus voice-over internet calling.

Only a dozen states in the U.S. have only one area code, and Idaho has been one of them until now.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, existing numbers will not change and the new area code will only apply to newly created phone numbers.
