As we wrap up American Heart Month, here's some easy exercises I discovered we should all be dong to stay heart healthy!

According to WebMd, these are some fairly easy changes you can make in your life to have a healthy heart. Keep in mind, when you feel like you just simply don't want to work out, that people who don't exercise are twice as likely to develop heart disease!

  • Take a brisk 30 minute walk everyday. (As the weather has gotten warmer, I have personally set a goal to take my little dog Snuggles out for a walk every afternoon. He's happy and I feel better too!)
  • Jog, run, or ride a bike if you want to mix things up a bit. The goal is to get your heart pumping, but you should still be able to hold a conversation with someone. (I'll be honest, coming from someone who needs to workout far more than I do, I have never understood how people can run and hold a normal conversation, but if you can, good for you!)
  • Stretch a couple times a week
  • Incorporate some strength training. You can use your own body weight, resistance bands, or regular weights. Try to do this 2-3 times a week, giving your muscles a chance to rest a day in between.

Of course if you are just starting to workout, be sure to check with your doctor and stop immediately if you ever feel pain or pressure in your chest.

Another good tip I recently received is to set small goals. Don't tell yourself you have to workout every day for the rest of your life. Set a goal to workout for the next 5 days and then go from there!

Here's to being heart healthy!
