BSU to Drop Wrestling, Add Baseball

Bittersweet news for the Broncos.

Boise State University announced yesterday that wrestling will be dropped, in an effort to adopt a baseball program.

According to KTVB, Assistant athletic director Joe Nickell said the school is trying to “better align its programs with other universities in the Mountain West Conference.”

So what happens to those students who received scholarships to wrestle at BSU? Well, it looks like the school is doing their best to accommodate them.

Athletic dirctor, Curt Apsey, told KTVB:

“We will continue to honor the scholarships we provide our student-athletes, and will do all we can to help those who want to continue their collegiate wrestling careers elsewhere.”

Officials say the coaches contracts will also be honored. Some of the student athletes, however, are not taking it well-understandably so. Here’s what senior wrestler, Austin Dewey, told KTVB:

“It’s hard to take in, it’s really hard man, I’ve never felt more angry in my life at one decision. This program is, I can’t even tell you what it means to me, my family, to the community, just in this city, it means everything to have this team here, cause that is something these local kids all look up to want to do.”

Although dropping the wrestling program will help pay for baseball, it won’t completely cover the cost of the new intercollegiate sport at BSU. But despite the costs, officials say, ‘[…] the sport will “strengthen the long-term brand and reputation of Boise State at a national level.”
