A bat in Wilder has tested positive for rabies! Here's what you need to know to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your pets safe.

Health officials say the bat that tested positive for rabies has not had any contact with people.

According to KTVB, rabies is a virus that attacks the immune system. You or your pets can be infected not only by a bite from the animal with rabies, but also through a scratch.

If left untreated, rabies can be fatal.

Most people become infected when they bring home a sick or dead bat or a bat finds its way into a home. A bat's teeth are so small that a person may not even realize they've been bitten or scratched.

  • To avoid being infected, don't touch bats with your bare hands.
  • Be sure that your pets are up to date on their vaccinations.
